Early 50's in Negril

May 27th - 29th, 2014

Today for our Negril Today page we thought we would toss out a "Throw Back Thursday" photo from way back! The early 1950's - '53 or '54 to be more precise. Before any modern tourism had started, this was the Negril beach. No buildings, structures or huts for that matter insight, just trees, a small width of sand and a very young Kirk Douglas checking out something in the jungle on the what has become our world famous Seven Mile Beach of Negril, Jamaica! According to IMDB, "At the time of shooting, Negril was an isolated village with limited accessibility due to a poor road. Director Richard Fleischer was adamant that the Xtabi Caves were to be used since they were ideal for film production due to their large size and raw, natural beauty. These caves were also used almost 20 years later for another famous movie, Papillon, whose director, Franklin Schaffer was close friends with Fleischer. The filming (in the 50's) at Xtabi was not without its challenges, and production was stopped entirely for three days when Hurricane Florence lashed the island in 1953." We thought you might enjoy this little bit of Negril history. To assist you in finding the perfect place to stay while in Negril, please be sure to check out our Hotels section!
