Hey Smith, OK, I'll bite.

I'm not sure that I would characterize those of us who point out that posts are sometimes difficult to decipher as anti-Patois devotees. We are not anti-Patois at all. I love hearing Patois spoken by Jamaicans in Jamaica. And yes, if I don't understand what they are saying I will ask them to repeat and maybe even teach me a little. But since I am not fluent in Patois and certainly am not proficient in it's written discourse, I stand by my position that it is difficult to decipher certain posts when heavily written in pseudo-patois. And to clarify, a thrown in mi or dem is not what we're talking about.

Perhaps you haven't been seeing further posts because we have all explained in detail our opinion and since those of you who disagree choose to continue to bash those opinions, what is the point in continuing the discussion?

Finally, I will repeat it one more time - I don't think anyone should change their ways. If someone wants to post in patois, spanish, french, german, or anything else, please do so. Everyone should just do what makes them happy.

After following this thread VERY closely (from beginning to end), and after some reflections, I hear-you LOUD & clear, and (to a point) AGREE 100% with your point-of-view, where you wrote:::
"""... I stand by my position that it is difficult to decipher certain posts when heavily written in pseudo-patois ..."""

I'm feeling you !!

I remember when I first started reading this board, and several other Ja-boards & sites. I was upset & frustrated 'cause i couldn't unna-stan & figure-out what in the world they were talking about. I wanted to scream ..!!!..

It took a while, but eventually i caught-on (a likkle). After a few-more vacation-trips, and after dipping deeper into the Jamaican culture, meeting & chatting with more island residents, THEN the "why" folks post-in-Patois clicked, and made sense.

As i mentioned (above) in another post, doing-so is a natural uncontrol-able progression ----- Jamaica changes folks, in weird ways, and for some (like myself) it gets in your blood, brain, mind, and typing-fingers, and you find you can't help yourself.

forgive me, if i've offended

as with Patois, sometimes many-times i over-do or mash-up the English-language, TOO. Don't take ME (or ANYthing on these message-boards) all that seriously or personal-ly. For the most part, we-all here are nice folks --- just having fun... enjoying each other's company... help-ing, share-ing & learn-ing.

BrenJahLee on: Friday, December 07, 2007 - 05:29 pm, wrote:

tru-tru, I'm in the pro-Patois camp, but I don't consider the "disagreement" of opinions as "bash-ing". It's what it IS:::>>> differing opinions [[ period ]] .... nobodys bashing anybody.

writing-Patois-wise on the board, have you ever seen & read boardie-Karin's posts, when she get's going ...??... Lawd Lawd --- that wo-mon can chat & write pure-Patois.

IF i'd not tried to learn & if i'd not-played with Patois, I would have skipped over Karin's posts, and missed a TON of GOOD information:::: priceless information that has since enhanced my Jamaica-experiences.

again,,boardie-BrenJaLee ---- i'm feelin' ya.

i just though of something:::::

have you noticed, how every now & then, when some-folks do an on-site post (while they're on-island on-vacation) ...???... ...their board-voice changes.

their "voice" changes 'cause they "can't help themselves".
lol
lol
lol

they're on-island,, in the mix,,, and naturally start to do that short-short herky-jerky Patois-thing.... this voice-shift is very evident in those folks who take long trips.

sooooooo, when folks leave their first(?)-world cocoons, and slip onto the Ja-message-board, they TOO do a mental-flip, and start to chat some Patois --- some more so than others.

so it goes

Smith, don't worry, I'm not offended in the least. I don't think you could offend me if you tried. There are too many people in this world who cry out that they are offended by the slightest things and I just roll my eyes and think "oh please, get over yourself." Maybe I listen to AM talk radio too much!

I will also admit that a big part of my personal problem is that having a degree in journalism and doing a lot of writing for my job, I am constantly editing content and grammar of virtually everything I read, as I read it. It's a habit that I just don't think can ever be broken because if I stop, my work will become sloppy, then I'll get fired, and then I won't be able to afford to go back to Jamaica again. So trying to read the posts in heavy pseudo-patois almost quite literally hurts my brain. And that in a nutshell is why I just skip over those posts.

No, I've been following with interest. My original question was answered long ago: Jamaicans aren't offended by non-Jamaicans attempting to write patois, and are more likely to be amused by it.

I love to read all the posts no matter what! In patois or the queen's english. I find it rather invigorating to try to figure out wha agwan, when a post is in patois. When I am in Jamaica, I always try to learn more and more patois out of respect to the country. I am not ever trying to be something I am not, but trying to respect an island that I love. I have always found in my visits, that when I attempt to speak patois, I always get a smile. Whether it is a smile, laughing at my pathetic attempt or a smile, assuming that I am trying to learn, I accept it with grace. So, with that, I shall depart...soon come and with much respect..

Smith, you do crack me up. I had to go get a kleenex I was laughing so hard I was crying.

Juju, while I appreciate you justifying my opinion because of the personal reasons I explained, you forgot to point out that your opinion on this issue is also drawn from personal reasons. Everybody has their own personal reasons behind their opinion on this and every issue. It's what makes us human. We draw on who we are, our experiences and our education, to form our personal opinions on everything from what we choose to eat to how we write or speak. If we were all the same, life would be awfully boring.
