Shell, I agree. Some folks, myself included, DO need baby steps to get their feet wet; it's an immersion process (please see my post in another nearby thread about my "process"). About the vendors, I think there are two kinds of people in the world, LOL! One group, like most of the folks on this board, who are not bothered by being approached by vendors & either look at their wares or feel comfortable smiling & saying, "no thanks." The other group feels VERY uncomfortable with this sort of social interaction, maybe due to shyness, being introverted, feeling anxious, etc. The problem in my house is that I'm of the first group & my husband is of the 2nd group, so he will NEVER go back with me! Bummer! Buena salud, buena vida (Good health, good life)

GoGo Worldwide & Apple Vacations offer some of the smaller hotels along the beach, like Merrills, Rondell Village, CoCo La Palm, Legends, White Sands & Negril Gardens. |

At least once a day I find myself explaining to one of my clients why I go to Jamaica so much. I also end up answering questions about safety on the island. I do my best to clear up misconceptions about Jamaica, while I do let them know that there are in fact higglers. I also let them know that this is one of the reasons I like Jamaica. I tell them that just like here at home, these people are trying to make a living and put food on their tables. Some of them are nice and others not so nice. I also tell them that you need to feel comfortable telling someone that you are not interested in buying what they're selling. And there are those occasions that you meet one of these people and end up buying a keepsake that you will treasure always. Anyway, I think that it's people like us that can help to clear up misconceptions about Jamaica and tell people why we love it. I have had clients decide to go to Jamaica because..."It must be amazing, because you keep going back so much!" They've come home and raved about it and thanked me for helping them to make their decision to go to Jamaica. While this isn't as grand scale as a big marketing campaign...it sure can hurt! BTW my clients are all coming in and asking about my trip...they are floored when I tell them that we already have plans to go back in January. One of them asked me to tell her husband (who was coming in the next day) how great it was and that he should take her there for their next vacation! LOL so of course I did and I can't wait to see if it worked! So let's keep the word of mouth going...like I said, it can't hurt! Respect "Let the beauty we love be what we do"~Rumi

I too have to explain why I keep going to Jamaica and always have to answer questions about drugs and security. I was recently rewarded by someone I know, when I found out the day before they were leaving, that they were going to a wedding in Negril for their first trip. We didn't have long to talk as we were at a busy lunch event. Anyway, I gave her the mini rundown of Negril 101. I also told her to look out for my friend on the beach. They happened to run into him and he took them out on a snorkeling trip, which they said was great. They loved Negril, and I hope I contributed to that a little. It's grass roots advertising. Word of mouth and this website are a great way to promote the smaller hotels and vendors you respect. |

Personally what I do to help my friends in Negril is answering questions as an "expert" in Jamaican section of a big russian travel forum at turizm.ru . They made a section for Jamaica in february 2006 and activity there is only growing, especially last few months. Some guys from that board even used my fellow driver when they were in Negril. I also wrote several articles and descriptions of Jamaican attractions/restaurants/bars for some russian travel agency web sites. I hope what i do helps, especially now, when the US dollar is getting cheaper compared to Russian Ruble, so it means Jamaica gets cheaper for russians/europeans to visit. Everyting a work, noting nah plug out :-)

| Congratulations Robert Farese! Don't forget to give Captain Kirk a call if you or any of your newbies want a tour of the Negril coast via boat, or a lunch on Booby Cay, etc. 876-874-1064. Tell him Q sent you. You're a senior boardie - I'm sure you've got all of this covered. |

Negril gets mentioned twice in this month's Caribbean Travel and Leisure, in a article entitled "10 Things You Must Absolutely Do"-cliff diving, which I will never do! and "Our Favorite Tables" Rockhouse for a sunset dinner. I must admit that the old time synting my husband had there was a treat! I first seriously read about Negril in an article in Travel and Leisure that called Country Country one of the best bargains in the Caribbean and fell head over heels crazy to go. Which we did in April and are returning in about 3 weeks for a 14 day stay! Just from my stories and pictures at least three other couples I know had trips there this summer. Many people I talk to still feel that Jamaica is too dangerous to chance, including my white-bread sister who was robbed at knife point in Tortola! I can honestly say that I never felt fearful in Negril, yes we were careful, but as recommended by the boardies, with the same care I would feel at home, especially in dwontown Cleveland! |

legalizing weed will increase tourism in Jamaica ?? First of all I can get that stuff anywhere anytime >>>> although it is a crime so I became a chronic alcoholic instead I must be missing something on this one. Legalize it... and most of the beachcats and their families will be starving....Know how many people survive on selling a bag to a tourist....btw the cost of a lb. of herb to a connected Jamaican is about what dinner costs at LTU pub. Huge margins on a prolific item Helps keep away the unemployment and hungry belly. It's that f^kn quack and blow that is ruining tings. Maybe they should legalize that....stop the violence and personal degradation from begging which is so sad. btw....I know more than a few tourists who go there for that....lol you know the ones... with their jaws moving from side to side been der done dat...it's compulsive slavery My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

| Garzan, it was a wonderful dish! Recommended by our waiter. It was a medley of seafood-calamari, shrimp, and snapper, maybe other things too, in a rundown sauce, lots of coconut, lime onions, tomatoes, creamy and spicy. at the same time! Oh my, my, I may have some later in October when we go back! |

DB Farms would be a nice place to recommend to newbie's for a visit and also for those of you who have been going to Jamaica forever. It will be a real change of pace from the beach and has a vibe like no other. The 8 years I have lived on and off in Jamaica I always loved having a yard party, but never had enough room to make it very big. Now I have 7 acres with various animals, plants and scenery. You can feel the beautiful breeze off of Salmon Point and Little Bay accross the farm, you can veiw the Westmoreland Mountains from the veranda of the shop and you can watch a beautiful sunset. Also you can mingle with a variety of animals. There are no higglers and no hassles at DB Farms so put it on you list of places to go while visiting Negril. One Love Irie debbied/aka Farmer Deb

We'll have to have a boardie party at least once or twice a month it should be fun!!! This pic was taken at the 2nd annual boardie meeting at the Boat Bar that I was late for as they say Soon Come lol!! Irie

| Morning Debbie! How tings in Maine? You got your return ticket in hand yet? Nice picture of the gate...remember all the cussing and fussing that went into the creation and setting of that gate? Looks like the carpenter finally listened and got it right! Missing you but will see you come November. |
