Smith...whether it's locals or not during the Christmas/new Years holiday, lots of the hotels are filled and the beaches are packed...People don't return to Jamaica for many reasons and I absolutely refuse to believe it's because of the hustling...where you say you no so many that won't return because of it,I know nobody that won't return because of it...let me change that..I do know one really stoosh gal that went to Ochi once and said she'd never return because of the "beggars".

Some people feel like "one and done"...once they visit once there's no need to return. They travel to other places....Many can't afford to return and with the economy these days I can understand why.

I'm almost certain that spring break was slower than usual for other reasons besides hustlers!

My take on Spring Break being slow is that it has become much cheaper for the Breakers in other parts of the Tropics. Mexico particularly is crazy cheap cheap.... Breakers want to partay, drink and eat, and lie in the sun.... Most places on the beach cant touch Mexico in price and the few that can (FH being one of them) is not enough to bring in the quantity...

Of course this could also lead to discussion about how the main venues in the Cliffs (MXIII, Kaisers and Central Park) have all closed down. Gone are the huge venues that brought ppl and $$ to the Westend....

Just my 2 cents :-)

Winni, you are correct, the airfares to get to the Caribbean side of Mexico are very cheap, cheap for the Spring Breakers. I don't know how the hotel prices stack up, but bet that there are plenty of bargains to be had when you combine airfare & hotel together.

Now, about the "hustler" factor, me myself, they really not bother me too much. The only time I was ever really bothered was when one guy grabbed my arm & quickly slapped a threaded bracelet on it, then demanded money. When I tried to take off the bracelet to give back to him (I already had TWO!), he moved back & said "no." Then started up with the "respect, mon" monologue. I hate to admit it, but my husband finally gave him some money just to get him out of our hair! Now, Don (hubby) REALLY majorly dislikes the "hustler" factor in Jamaica & has stated that he'll NEVER go back, never ever. Which makes me sad, bc I still want to go. I think some of it is just Don's personality, he is a big-time introvert & does not really enjoy conversing with people under the BEST of circumstances. Whereas I am an extrovert. I managed to get him to go back to Negril once by saying that staying on the cliffs would be better, and it was, except when we'd walk from Xtabi to another place to have dinner. Then we'd occasionally be side-lined by someone hard-selling something. What closed the deal for him ever going back again was when two guys in a car stopped & tried to sell him "pineapple," which he realized was a HUGE golden-green bud! When he said "no," the guys, yeah, you guessed it, started in on the whole "respect" thing. Sigh. . .

Jenny, dont forget about the watered down drinks in those huge AI's, they dont even come close to the AI's in JA. Lawd, huge ugly 10 story blocks of hotel rooms... uggh!

Regarding the 'hustler' thingy, well, they dont tend to bother me much, plus one of my tricks is to learn their names.. hehe, then I give em a shout out from the water edge, they are so impressed I know their name, they leave me alone....

We'll have fun, I promise!

Waterfrontman.....

Very Good Point.........From our very first visit I was told
by a Jamaican Policeman,..... rather than throwing stones at 'em,,,
which I preferred,
just to say a firm NO!..and then hold a fist toward the hustler, and say also very, but cordial firm... "Respect-ever time".......It does seem to work.....

Here is me slightly "off frequency" as you might say,,,getting the latest "low-down" from a smiling Policeman....Notice difference shoulder width...lol

I had just asked him..."If I drive over you.....do you become a "sleeping policeman"?????......lol

"I still dont throw stones at 'em..........

well if they
persist???????

One of the commonest tricks by hustlers is to walk up with their hand thrust out as if to shake hands with you. They then will not let go of your hand.

I have reached the point where I simply refuse to "shake." I then have the option of walking away with a cheery, "no thanks!"

No ones touching on the relationship hustle. Some men and
woman invest a lot of time to build relationships with
vacationers just to profit from goods & $$$$$.

the relationship hustle is a touchy subject, of course your knew that which is why you posted it... but my personal feelings on it have changed over these past 2 years... you really can't judge it unless you've lived it and or experienced it.... I could go into a really detailed post but I'm in a good mood today and don't feel like getting badgered :-)

Interesting thread, (what I can understand with the
dem's, mi's, dis, dat, and da's, and tings.)

I guess I've been very lucky with "the husslers"
although 'the whistle idea' isn't bad. Especially if
you're walking alone at night.

Sad though, like in our cities. So I guess "caution"
is the key word.
And then: "enjoy your holiday"!

Drives me nuts too. I usually don't bother trying to translate, just skip those posts.

Yet another "trick" I have been told is that the hustler will check the color or your feet to see how long you've been in the sun, e.g. Jamaica, and skip the hustle if it looks like you've been there awhile.

Rambo your tip about loud noise is so true!! Have been in a questionable situation (or 2) in my life. Questionable meaning direct concern on my part for my safety as well as my wallet. Will not mention location but will admit very late @ night. When the threat was made & even tho there was way more for the home team than me. Loud response on my part and no fear attitude brought many people out to see what was going on. Both residents as well as few tourists. Seemed to work like magic, bad guys all of a sudden slithered away. And you know the rest "lived to party another day" :-) Barney

Jamaican street hustlers are just like dogs, they can smell fear. one whiff of it and they pounce but they're all bark and rarely will one bite. I've dealt with them in every major city here in Jamaica and almost all of them run the same hustles. After awhile its easy to pick them up and shoot them down. Many hustlers are second and third generation hustlers and it is not uncommon to find an entire family of them with their supposed "hungry kids" being their lead scam.

you have got to remain firm, look them direct in the eyes and tell them, "No thank you". Don't stop to speak with them, remain in motion or continue what you are doing. If you give them time they will want even more from you.

Be conscious of facial expressions and body language with them. You may find yourself approached by some rather unattractive and unclean individuals but be careful not to make faces or motions that will disrespect them. It won;t help the situation.

If they come back with the respect thing then be the first to remind them they are being disrespectful when they are. Tell them you mean no disrespect and you just want to be left alone. If they raise voices then remain firm and elevate yours as well or they'll see it as a sign of concession or that they are wearing you down and they will persist.

It's OK to do things like roll up your window or turn on windshield wipers to avoid hustlers, you can even put your hand up palm forward towards them and ask them to backup or leave and it's not disrespectful. You can politely ask them to leave you alone as you walk away and expect them to oblige most often. Don't ever touch, stare, name call or curse at them, thats disrespectful.

There are lots of untreated cases of mental illness in Jamaica and you can tell the really bad ones pretty fast but all of them seem to understand their boundaries and will respect your wishes so long as you express them clearly and with some force.

Of course a $50 Jamaican bill can go a long way in soothing much of this. You don't have to pay everyone you see but handing out a buck or two on occasion won't kill most of us and paying off a persistent hustler can pay off in some light entertainment. There really are some characters roaming these streets and they put on a great show for practically nothing.
it's not where you are or where you been but where you go that makes the difference

"There really are some characters roaming these streets and they put on a great show for practically nothing."

This brings one individual to mind that never fails to find me. A real character. They call him Gravey and he hangs out most of the time on the beach road by Time Square. I guess you could say that I adopted him in a way. Lets just say he doesn't have to hustle much to get something out of me.
