Can you guys recommend a lens for wildlife?

As you stated, the lenses start to get pretty expensive.I don't think I'd be in a rush to start upgrading lenses until you had more time to decide what you really want to focus on in your photography. If I were to suggest a lens for wildlife it would be the Canon 100-400L IS. It's a really nice lens and at $1200-$1400 it's about as cheap as you can get by for nice and sharp images of wildlife. There are more expensive ones but not as versatile as this one.All the images at this link except the two fall color ones were taken with the 100-400. As you see you can use it for other things also but at over 3 lbs it tends to get heavy.

Nice images, Katani and Bruce! The scenery is gorgeous in your location, Katani. I made a mental note to shoot more reflections, yours are beautiful.

Bruce, I figured you were shooting with some sharp glass. My telephoto was relatively inexpensive at $159 and although I'm glad I bought it, I can see how a pro lens, especially with IS, would give me some awesome capabilities. Sticker shock is something to be reckoned with though. The air show is coming up soon at Edwards AFB and your lens would be right at home there.

Dread, that is a very sharp lens, however the vast majority of the shots I post here are with my walk around lens,a 28-105. I just picked the 100-400 up at the end of June and I am thinking of dumping it and picking up a Canon 70-200L 2.8.IS. While the lens is nice for wildlife it is a little slow under low light conditions plus I think the 70-200 fits my long term needs more, which is not wildlife images. It's even more expensive and I can't really justify one lens at that price so 2 is out of the question.

If it's smaller and lighter, plus its a 2.8, you could just get a Canon EF 2x Teleconverter and have a better kit without giving up anything on the long end. I'd like a fast tele lens for my Nikon. My current 70-300mm is f4 - 5.6.

A smaller, lighter lens would probably do a great job handling some of Timm's curves

Probably because the groom wasn't paying attention - not looking in the bride's eyes, too busy looking down the beach, eyeing the fruit lady's wares...
