I love to drive around Jamaica. I've become enamored with my TomTom and started searching for auto GPS maps for Jamaica. The Jamaica Caves site mentions this. I've found an article on the Jamaican Auto Assoc site that there is a Garman solution, but can't seem to get to the next step - Where do I buy one? Anybody on the Board have any experience with this? gps devices are not necessary in jamaica, it's easy to orient yourself, can't get lost and if you do, it'll be an adventure . . .
better to want than to have

JB

I've had several of those adventures! lol I've explored the whole island using WWII era topographic maps. Traces of some of those roads in remote areas are still there, but I'm not quite as nutty 20 years later. CDW or not, it's easy to get off the beaten path violate the rental agreement.

Clearly, you're not a map and gadget fetishist. I'm looking for other unabashedly, guilty parties. Respect --MH

MH - when you find the solution let us know. Coleen is a true advocate of the technology.

Like yourself I've slid around much of the Island far off the A's and B's with some pretty dated info. Lord knows I've had a few of those have to back track moments because the road ran dry and I do thrill in that adventure.

But in Feb we are going to do an around the Island trip with a sweep through Kingston. I have studied the google earth satelite of Kingston but another crutch might keep me from falling to the wayside,,,,
I did not know where I wanted to be, but in the end I got there

Most of the articles, example 1 - example 2, I could find on the web, pointed to the Jamaica Automobile Association as the the place to get the maps, with or without purchasing the Garmin unit from them. The JAA website is little help.

JAMNAV may be the way to go. The second line says it is available as a download.

Good Luck.

JAMNAV looks like the way to go, Hubus. Thanks. I left a message with JAA, but no response. Go figure!

C&C and JB,
I survived Kingston and here's my little adventure there:

It's always an adventure when you drive in JA. My first circumnavigation of the island, I put 950 miles on a brand new Honda Jazz. I too had a tire with a slow leak. Pulled into Kingston a 5pm and turned off a round about and found myself facing the wrong way into one way, rush hour traffic and I've got a $2,000 deductible. Yikes!

I pulled off the road into a parking lot and a guy comes up to our car and leans into the window, "Mon, you're going the wrong way. Where you trying to go?" "The Mayfair hotel," I whimpered. He gives me clear, concise directions and a few minutes latter we were there. Whew!

Somewhere along the way, in one of those JA pot holes that are really rips in the space time continuum, I caved in the drive side rocker panel. When I returned the car, I pulled into a very tight spot. When the attendant checked it out, he couldn't get his head down low enough to see the damage. Ever since then, I've noticed that they back the car back out so they can give it a good look over. I think I started something.

T&B

I am old school! As in, "I'm not from Marblehead. I am Marblehead!"

Old school is cool. It's also old hat - mine is worn, torn and comfy, but insufficient unless I stick to main roads. I like to get out on the rim so I can get a better prerspective on where I am on the space time continuum. I want to go where few Smooth Headed International Travelers have gone before . . . and come back. Respect --Marblehead
