We stay for 7 weeks the last few years.I always rent a car as I travel around alot and don't want the hassle of finding rides.I've been watching the rates and they had been around $55 to $60 per day with Hertz willing to give me 10 % off for a long term rental ($54/ day)Thrifty has a deal for $40 per day so I jumped on it.Thought I would let you know.

We used Vernon's car rental in Negril, they had good prices and treated us well. You can find them at the round about up the hill by Caribbean Delight or at Fun Holiday.

Island is (was) the largest. Years ago their rates were close/same as Budget. When I had to return the car to Island in the AM, B 4 the office opened, they checked the car in and I did not incur any phony charges of damage/missing parts.

I do not recommend dhana, aka mobay.com in MoBay. Before two women give me crap for trying to destroy the local economy and starving babies because I'm not giving the details of peoples experiences with this company, go do your own research in the archives if they still exist.

The insurance adds to ones expenses. Few credit card companies/banks cover the CDW, where YOUR auto insurance company would pay for the first 1500. And if anyone thinks they can master using a standad but left hand floor shift while also driving on the wrong side of the road, my hat is off to you. :-) Get an automatic.

I miss the standard tranny cars. I haven't seen any in 20 years. Who has them? Does anybody else flick the wipers when making a turn and then when you get back do the same on your personal car? lol

Re coverage of the CDW: I had to call and check w/ all my cards until I found on that still covered Jamaica. It was a Diners Club Master Card. It's always a little exciting when they take an impression of your card for $2,000. So far, in 25 years I've only been scammed for $50. A dubious surface scratch that somehow I didn't get noted on the initial inspection. I photo the car in detail now. Love digital cameras!

We tried to rent from Thrifty one year as they has a very good rate but when we got there, they said all their cars where rented out and they has nothing for us. They refused to help us in any way, so we won't try to use them anymore.

Silverfox, it's good to hear your experience was good. Hopefully, Farmer, your's will be as well.

My CC covers the insurance, but I've used Elvis's across from Sunbeach the last few times I needed to drive to Sav or elsewhere. Used Vernon's once-had to push my foot thru the floor board to stop-felt like Fred Flintstone.

The one thing I couldn't get used to! Don't mind driving on the other side, it's fun. No problems mon! The route taxis are still the best to get around in.

I wholeheartedly agree! No fun to come around a sharp curve on a hill and all you see just above eye level is LEYLAND - on the front grill of a truck. Yikes.

I've had my exciting moments with LEYLAND, mostly on the open roads where they love to bore down and scared me off the road. It's amazing how close they can come without hitting you. The talented b!@t#$ds! There's probably bigger mosquitoes plastered to the grill than the subcompact I'm renting. What really scares me are the pedestrians and goats when you round that blind curve. And then there's the potholes . . .

On the other hand, the freedom to get away from the tourist areas and experience the rest of Jamaica is so rewarding.

Yeah, LOL. My husband kept doing this but he got better each year. Last year was his first time using a stick shift down there where everything is reversed. After a little while he got the hang of it.
