I love to drive alone across the countryside of Jamaica, about mid week I ran to Sav, it was a bitter sweet mission, 14 or 15 years ago we got to know a waiter at Kuyaba, over the years as he moved to other properties we had kept in touch - would bring in supplies for his kids, my cousin had gotten very close, in September they had finaly gotten a work visa to bring him to the states - his families life was going to get a boost, but as departure day got closer a health issue reared it's ugly head, kidney failure had brought about a battle for life, I did not join the health care in Jamaica thread and I have been to clinics for minor needs - they are adequate, all I know is what I know, but I will state without any qualms that if you are comparing the hospital in my home town here in Iowa and Cornwall Regional while you are in a battle for your life you would be appalled with the state of the care and I'm not blameing the care givers - if they do not have the tools they can only provide comfort, the technology, the physical plant and the lack of basic pharmacology at Cornwall Regional,,,,, nuff said. On this day I was carrying enough money across to the family get a shunt surgically implanted in order to hopefully get dialysis started ,,,, it was going to be a razors edge walk, stepping outside the Jamaican public health care system for private care while maintaing your place in a long waiting line within the system, last Saturday the surgery took place, as of today a violent reaction to transfusions and a new medication has still not allowed a transfer to Kingston for further treatment, the experience has been in my thoughts constantly After a tearful goodbye of gratitude from the wife I needed some alone time, I cut up to Grange Hill from Little London and trecked back to the north side of the island coming out at Green Island,,,, the valley leading up is an old sugar producing area
many of the buildings in pretty rough repair includin what reminded me of the factory towns found at the turn of the century in the mid-west
a gradual rise begins to appear
 old architecture abounds

I did not know where I wanted to be, but in the end I got there

signage speaks to the spiritual
 the ways of the world
and to capitalism in it's base form
and as you begin to enjoy the modern
the present past comes back to stare you in your face

I did not know where I wanted to be, but in the end I got there

Blessed! Thank Jah, there are folks in this world that give of themselves as you both do! As a retired RN of 37 years, I have seen a lot in the states. I have little experience in 3rd world countries, but I can imagine the reality. Even stateside, I have heard a physician ask for money upfront before doing a needed procedure. Unethical as it maybe, I have seen it first hand! So, I can only pray that your friend will make it through this tough time. But, with caring friends like you, he definitely has a better chance. Thank you for being so generous and kind to our brothers and sisters of this world. Decent healthcare should be a right not a privilege, until then, may we all be blessed to have friends like you guys.

I always look for your posts here-they are always very uplifting. Reading this one brought up some memories and some tears. Too bad that the situation your friend and his family is in isn't uncommon. Prayers said for them, and for you. We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are. Anais Nin
