About how much do you tip a beach musician when he plays a particular (requested) song for you?

.........you tip them $4500J and they'll come to serenade you every day. ......we hired beach musicians to play at our wedding reception @ Beaches. They played for about a half hour and everyone at the reception thought they were great..... |

I have a solo guitar player in mind. I saw him (from my balcony)near Coco La Palm in April. I would like to have him do "Three little birds" for me on my Birthday and I was thinking of giving him $10 (U.S). I was not sure if I was being too cheap.

This is a good question, because it is something I have been wondering about myself. I mean, should it be five dollars per song, or ten for a few songs, or should it be a set amount per musician if there is more than one? And if they are playing at a set place and have a tip jar what would be a good amount to put in the jar? http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=5801

I am sure they're grateful to receive whatever you have to give. I normally give 3-5 bucks for the duration of their "performance" which can be 2-3 songs or more (depending on the audience). Some people (amazingly) just sit there and ignore them, they don't even acknowledge their presence. Others get into it, and get up and dance even. They're great, and the best beach pics you will EVER take is of them with the beautiful sea in the background!!!

I typically tip $500J and consider buying a CD if they have one. It's fun to give a listen and to show a little respect after a few songs.

I agree. Some of my best images. All the more reason to show respect. Emancipate yourself from mental slavery

I also cannot believe the people who sit and listen to the tunes, and don't tip a bit. I will never understand it. They seem so ungrateful. I usually tip early, and hope others will follow.

Someone suggested bringing guitar strings as a gift. So, I have ordered a few sets and some picks to give as a gift also.

I have never felt comfortable anywhere, when someone has come up and started playing music and/or singing right in my face! I just don't like it, it creeps me out. Probably in a similar way that some folks are freaked out by clowns, or big animals, etc. There's always more than one side of an experience. . I tip 500J and often will buy them a round of beers or tings if they playing requested songs. If the serenade was requested, I would tip. If the serenade was not requested, I may not. Simple. Not everyone carries cash when laying out on the beach. Not everyone enjoys an interruption in their "me" time. I never felt that comfortable when a music group shows up at your dinner table and won't leave until they get $. You feel like your peaceful romantic meal was ruined by having to pay to be left alone. Maybe it is because I tend to be pretty shy and don't like the awkward feeling of drawing attention. I don't think I am rude or cheap for feeling this way though... Please support: bringseanhome.org Campaign to return kidnapped minor Sean Goldman to the United States

when we are eating, I will wave them along-simple they leave, if I ask them over for "a" song, thats worth a 5..........after that song I just say "thanks, maybe somebody else here has a song" and they leave.... Absolutely, if you have asked them to play or requested a song then a tip is definitely in order. However, if you're just sitting there minding your own business and they come and play and then expect a tip, is that any different from someone coming up to you and slathering aloe all over you and then expecting you to pay for it? If it's not something you asked for should you be expected to pay for it? For the most up-to-date Negril Map go to: http://ohliza.blogspot.com/2008/12/map-of-negril-jamaica.html

Right on about being requested! I don't tip someone that walks up playing a song. My "nest" use to be on the second floor but over looking the beach. I joked that beach music was free from up there. I have however "booked" beach musicians to come and play for a yard party a couple of times. I specially like the woman with the Tracy Chapman sounding voice!
