My guess is the stairs and lower platform are different than before Gilbert. Inside every older person is a younger person wondering 'What the heck happened?'

Jah Lion, Didn't get to Negril until 1992, but the damage from Gilbert was still VERY VERY evident on the West End. If I can figure out how to remove my 1992 pics from the Photo Album without tearing them, I'll scan and post. Any recommendations would be welcome. It was one of those photo albums with the sticky pages and clear film to cover the photos. I have tried to remove photos, but they are glued tight! The building shown in these photos that has the souvenior shop and bathrooms is identical to the building in my 1992 pics. Ricks was rebuilt after Gilbert in 1988 and again in 2004 after Ivan. I can't find my pics of the pile of Rubble after Ivan in 2004, but it was an amazing testament to the power of the sea! |

Thanks for the old pics - that's the Rick's I first saw when I hit Jamaica in 1991. Love the shot from the sea, looking at the cliffs -- very nice. Everything old is new again, same for the new post-ivan Rick's. But, as another saying goes - the more things change, the more they remain the same: the hustle, the tourists, the vibes. Rick's will always have a vibe, a vibe you might just want to check for a hot minute and then move on OR a vibe that you want to make a mainstay of your vacation. To each their own. We always make one stop at Rick's when we hit Jamaica -- the kids love the scene, the energy is always positive and fun. You can call it a tourist trap (yeah, so it is), a money pit (yeah, gouge gouge gouge), but you can always slide in, have a sit, don't buy NUTTIN if you don't want to, and just watch Life's Rich Pageant. That's always free. And that's always worth a look, no? http://vhmckenzie.blogspot.com http://www.vhmckenzie.etsy.com

I was thankful we got to go to the old Ricks. I have to say, it had more "charm" than the new one. It's like comparing a school carnival to Disney World. It nice but......... Yeah, it's a "tourist trap", but you have to try it (at least) once. It is some serious "real estate" that I would love to own. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I'm not sure what they did with it but they have footage from riding out the hurricane...they hid in the vault as it was the most structurally secure spot...there is one shot they got that is the first major surge of the storm. you can see the line of water start to appear and then seriously advance quite rapidly until it breaks over the wall and pretty much demolishes the old bar, which used to be the salt water swimming pool. a big chunk of it flashes past the camera. it was pretty wild footage. lol...it's called 'greeking' it is just used to hold space before proper editorial is dropped in. i'm kinda surprised that an outfit like that would let that stand in there, but then again, negril doesn't surprise me with very much anymore. but they are at the top of the list as far as decent graphic identities go, which I guess isn't saying tooooo much lol since most are like, what you would use to teach what NOT to do in graphic design. but this is just weird for it to be there. so it's kinda latin, lol... Back in the day, I have seen several going topless at Rick's. If you check the fresh water shower coming up from the ocean, you will probably see someone wearing even less. Sometimes even "old" folks ;-). Respect, Col. Andy & "Wildcat" Pam

Here's a couple picture taken at Rick's just 5 months after hurricane Gilbert. The bottom picture shows yours truly diving head first. Obviously I survived the experience.

omg those first pics are wonderful!!! thank you!! that's the rick's i remember from my first JA trip in '88.... that lush green area on the other side of Rick's wall was Dred Lion's place, where we had pitched our tent.... right up til the night that Gilbert roared in and took it down. Funny, he left us the hammock though, it was hangin on for dear life by one string on the tree we had it tied to. and we sure did save it in the end (although it required hours to de-tangle the thing) i went to rick's this summer after having not been there since 2001, and was so sad and dismayed to see how denuded that whole cliff is now, it's just bare rock with a few scraggly trees. |

| This place used to be a private residence in the 1970's -- very nice "Dr. Miller" and his wife. The area where the bar was used to be their swimming pool. They were only "on island" five months out of the year so that the other times people (like me) that used to live in the area could use their pool. The house was small but nice, many more plants all around the property before they sold the place to the original "Rick" a/k/a "Swishy/Ricky" |

Here's a couple of the old bar area and one more of the property to the south. I was amazed that after being heavily damaged by Hurricane Gilbert, Rick's was back to normal just 5 months later. But as you can see the vegetation was still very sparse. Personally I haven't been back to Rick's in many years.

My first trip to Ricks around 1975, they had just built the place and it looked a lot like the photo in Robert's thread. and there was a little gravel parking area in front. Back then;my friend Marc, his girl friend, and the future X Mrs. Nick, and I walked in. There was one guy in there, another young American who said, "Dude, you missed it, Mick Jagger Just Left!" We stayed and drank shots and beers for another hour or so then cruised back to the Yellow Bird Sea Tell. |

Dude, you missed it, Mick Jagger Just Left!" Nick in 75 that was probably true.............. Negril was a mecca for the hip counterculture.........no one else ever heard of Negril...........especially travel agents......lol I can't even recall exactly how I heard of it in 76. But I sure remember the experiences |
