I've read that some Haitians believe that when they die, their souls travel back to Africa to their ancestors land. May Legba lead them safely...

I agree with you....sad that the lack of heavy machinery will slow things greatly, need to have large deployment of lifting equipment, trucks, and so on......they just dont have that many..

I would think looting will start after "initial mind shock" passes....lets hope not...but, they are so poor, aver income is like 400 us a year maybe 2 a day for the good jobs????

I just read on-line that the Prime Minister thinks that more than 100,000 people have perished as a result of the quake. Also saw some really truly awful photos of the damaged areas posted by Reuters & AP. It is very, very bad in Haiti right now. Obama has pledged the aide and assistance from the U.S. & I believe that they're mobilizing now, as well as equipment & people from many other countries. The UN Ambassador from Haiti said that what they need most now is a floating ship hospital to be parked just off the coast of Port-Au-Prince, as hospitals have been heavily damaged & have all fallen, trapping patients inside.

"U.S. officials are laying out a massive military response to the Haiti earthquake, saying that ships, helicopters, transport planes and a 2,000-member Marine unit are either on the way or likely to begin moving soon."

"The general said that a U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, is also heading from Norfolk, Va., to the area and should arrive Thursday afternoon."

much more on alleged US military aid heading out here:
http://www.mohavedailynews.com/articles/2010/01/13/ap-update/us_us_haiti_earthqu ake.txt

personally, i have to wonder about the "are either on the way or likely to begin moving soon" part... time will tell.

lol...really,,,but I suppose it takes 24 hrs, for men, material, ships to start movin..............

but IMO we should have sent "fast response" like cargo planes with cranes, lifting equipment, trucks, ambulances...and always, sad to say..armed security teams......time is of the essence, people are trapped and dying.......

Jamaica is very lucky. That same fault line starts in Montego Bay and passes through the south of Hispaniola, which includes the Dominican Republic.

Construction in Haiti is not the best either as they just build with concrete with no steel reinforcements.

Really a sad day for them with now over 100,000 dead.

Those pictures are shocking....

Everyone can help. I spoke with all of my staff today, who will donate from their cheques next week, along with funds from our business to help.

I just got off the phone with a Haitian staff member and her family lives 5 minutes outside of the city....and there is still no word. That is the hardest part...not knowing.

We wait and pray....

It is truly awful what is going on there. Earlier, there was a backlog of planes and some had to circle and wait until they could be cleared to land as there is only one runway and they had to get the planes that had already landed out of the way. the FAA from the states has officially 'taken over' the airport, and once that was done, then things went much smoother. The first priority right now is to get the searchers with the dogs that can sniff out live humans out and about. After that is getting doctors with medical equipment out, then after that of course is water and food..and in the middle of this, to prevent disease from breaking out, bodies are collected in dump trucks and brought out of the city rapidly. The sad thing about this is there is not attempt of identification being made, so those buried in mass graves will never have their families and loves ones know for sure what has happened to them. :-(

I know many of us never bother to do it but it is always a good idea to register with the US Embassy in any country you plan to visit. It is the only way for them to evacuate you in case of emergency.

Here is the information for Jamaica. Pay close attention to the Registration paragraph and the "Help in an Emergency" tab on the left.

These people need our help NOW. Please, if you can only afford to send $ 5 or $ 10 or more, do so now. Many organizations have set up their websites for donating. You can text and donate. We donated through the Clinton Foundation.

https://re.clintonfoundation.org/SSLPage.aspx?pid=3869

Please help if you can. If this had happened in Jamaica, what would you do?

It takes an ordinary man to make a mistake. It takes an extraordinary man to admit he made one.

Yes, if you would like to donate, you can visit these websites, which have researched & give quickly-perused information about some of the charities you can give to:
http://www.charitywatch.org/hottopics/Haiti.html
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=1004
I ended up choosing AmeriCares, as 98.7% of every dollar actually goes to aiding the Haitian people!
