Mr. Ray Arthurs has played a major role in Negril's recent history.
Ray Arthurs comes from a family that goes back generations and was one of the seven families that originally populated Negril. This was in the days before piped water, electricity and the main road running through Negril.
After returning to Negril from a thirteen year stint in England, Mr. Arthurs bought a boat for fishing but taking tourists to the reefs proved more lucrative. In fact he was one of the first to offer these snorkeling trips. Things had improved immensely by then
as the basic amenities of water and electricity were in place and more and more visitors were coming to Negril. He then built two cottages that he rented out, mostly to hippies.
He went on to start a club along with family members called Golden Sunset, which had tremendous success. Golden Sunset was located where 23-7 is now and was the first place to have live shows in Negril. The Golden Sunset club closed its doors in 1984.
By this time Mr. Arthurs' rental business had expanded to include more rooms. Today the Golden Sunset Hotel is still operational and continues his business success.
Ray Arthurs has also contributed to the Negril community over the years. He has been Chairman for The Negril All Age PTA, The Negril Citizen Association, The Negril Environmental Protection Trust, served with the Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society, President of The Negril Chamber of Commerce and Director of Negril.com.
Ray Arthurs is a well liked, respected member of the Negril Community and we appreciate continued contributions.
