Our special lighthouse is located on the
West End at Negril Point which is the western most tip of
Jamaica. It was built by the French in 1894 and used a kerosene
gas lamp up until 1956 when it was changed to Acetylene gas. In
1985 it went solar and now runs automatically. The light flashes
every 2 seconds and can be seen as far as 20 miles out at sea
helping to guide ships and boats around Negril Point.
It is 100 ft high with 3 ft thick walls and has a catchment of
water underneath to help stabilize the lighthouse in the event
of an earthquake.
In the lighthouse are the original French gas lamp and even the
original lighthouse keeper’s logs dating back over 100 years.
After climbing 103 steps, the views from the top are stunning.
Even if you don’t go to the top, the grounds of the lighthouse
are beautiful, with wonderful cliff side views and of course
that fabulous Negril sunset.
Please note that large groups are not allowed to enter the
lighthouse and permission is required from the Port Authority of
Jamaica (Tel: 1 (876) 922 0290)However the lovely lighthouse
keeper Mr. Johnson may be persuaded to lead a few people to the
top.
